Serving the communities of Edison, Metuchen and Woodbridge Township

Edison Township, with access to nearly every major highway in Central New Jersey, is one of the state's most populous municipalities. Although the 2000 census reports a population of 98,000, officials now estimate it at about 100,000, and growing.

Bustling industrial parks, including Raritan Center, the state's largest, help provide Edison with one of the largest municipal tax bases in New Jersey. Among the notable companies with Edison campuses are The New York Times and United Parcel Service, Wakefern Foods, Etienne Aigner, Revlon Research Center and William Grant & Sons.

Once part of Piscataway and Woodbridge Townships, the area was incorporated as Raritan Township in 1870 as a loosely connected grouping of neighborhoods. When Metuchen seceded from the center of Raritan Township in 1900, the municipality was left looking like a 35-square mile donut. Metuchen now divides North Edison and South Edison.

Raritan Township changed its name to Edison Township in 1954, after Thomas Alva Edison, whose laboratory was in the Menlo Park section of town, and is close to the property of Edison's lab, wherein he perfected the electric light, invented the phonograph, and is credited with over 1000 patents.

The township was once home to two large military bases: The Raritan Arsenal and Camp Kilmer, which were phased out in the 1960s. Today Raritan Center and Middlesex County College stand on the Raritan Arsenal land. Camp Kilmer became Rutgers University's Livingston College and the Sutton Industrial Campus.

Located in the heart of central New Jersey, Metuchen captures the spirit of "small town USA." Metuchen's residents often walk or jog down its tree-lined streets, shop in the quaint Main Street stores, frequent the many playgrounds and parks, and gather at the annual events like parades, the arts & crafts festival and the "country" fair. Metuchenites often get to know their local merchants and get personalized service they find missing at large chain stores in the nearby shopping malls.

Aside from its "neighborly" small-town friendliness, Metuchen's age differentiates it from its more modern suburban neighboring towns. From the Victorian era horse watering trough on Middlesex Avenue to its many charming restored historic homes, Metuchen retains a historic character and timeless stability.

Also known as "The Brainy Borough" because of the many professionals, artists, educators and literary figures (and now even a former Governor) who lived here, Metuchen developed primarily due to its location and access to key transportation routes. From Metuchen it is easy to commute to New York City by train or bus, or to Newark, Trenton, or nearby Rutgers University in New Brunswick.

The Township of Woodbridge is the oldest original township in the state of New Jersey. It was settled in the early autumn of 1664 and was granted a charter on June 1, 1669 by King Charles of England. Joseph Dally, in his history of Woodbridge (Woodbridge and Vicinity, published 1873), records that it was so called in honor of Reverend John Woodbridge of Newbury, Massachusetts. Another illustrious son of Woodbridge, James Parker, was born in 1714 and established the first permanent printing house in New Jersey in Woodbridge in 1751. He was a business associate of Benjamin Franklin. In 1758 he established and printed, at Woodbridge, "The New American Magazine", the first periodical of its kind edited and published in the Colony and the second magazine of its kind on the continent.

What may be said to be the first antislavery meeting ever held in the United States was held in Woodbridge on the 4th of July, 1783, seven years after the Declaration of Independence and six years before George Washington was inaugurated as President of the United States. This meeting was held on the farm of Moses Bloomfield, a surgeon in the Continental Army, located north of Freeman Street where Barron Avenue runs through Prospect.

When George Washington left Mount Vernon for New York to take the oath of office as the first President of the United States, he left Philadelphia on the morning of April 21, 1789, arrived at Trenton that afternoon, and that same night journeyed to Princeton, where he spent the night. Accompanied by Governor Livingston, Washington (on April 22) proceeded to Woodbridge where he spent the night at the Cross Keys Tavern, then located on the northwest corner of Amboy Avenue and Main Street, on the site presently occupied by the Knights of Columbus. This famous old building still stands, having been moved to a new location to the rear of the original site on the north side of James Street. On the morning of April 23, Washington left for New York by way of Rahway and Elizabethtown.

Two famous resident of Woodbridge were Captain John Pike, the ancestor of General Zebulon M. Pike (Pike Peak was named in his honor), and Thomas Bloomfield, the ancestor of Joseph Bloomfield, for twelve years the Governor of New Jersey.

In the 1800's the large territory that made up Woodbridge Township was gradually divided and portions of the area went to other municipalities. But the Township is still one of the largest in the State with some 27 square miles. The original boundaries of Woodbridge comprised the communities we now know as Carteret, Rahway, New Dover, Oak Tree, Bonhamtown, Metuchen, Milton, Avenel, Colonia, Iselin, Menlo Park, Fords, Hopelawn, Keasbey, Sewaren, Port Reading, the eastern part of Raritan Township and Woodbridge Proper.
